Perlane

Like Restylane® and Juvéderm®, Perlane® is a clear, hyaluronic acid, gel filler that is used to restore facial volume and reduce the appearance of aging-related wrinkles, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Because the hyaluronic particles within Perlane® are larger and denser than those of Restylane®, Perlane® is designed to be injected into the deeper layers of skin and can treat more prominent facial folds, as well as larger areas of depleted volume.

What is Perlane® and how does it work?
Made from non- animal based hyaluronic acid- a natural sugar that helps to give skin a plump, youthful appearance - Perlane® is a cosmetic filler that can be injected into facial tissue to soften wrinkles and provide fullness. Perlane injections mimic the body's own natural hyaluronic acid. By restoring lost volume under the skin's surface, Perlane® can help to lift up and smooth out overlying lines, leaving the face looking younger and more refreshed.

How is Perlane® different from Restylane®?
Though Perlane® and Restylane® come from the same family of hyaluronic acid fillers, Perlane® is denser than Restylane®, making it a good choice for deeper, more prominent wrinkles. Restylane® is injected into the mid dermis and can affect more subtle changes in surface wrinkles and folds. Perlane® is injected deeper into the dermis and is well suited for deeper folds, as well as larger areas of depleted facial volume, such as in the cheeks or chin.

How are Perlane® and Restylane® different from other fillers?
Because Perlane® and Restylane® are made from hyaluronic acid that is free from animal proteins, there's virtually no risk of allergic reaction or animal-based disease transmission. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar that can be dissolved if needed, a reassuring feature for people being treated with filler for the first time.

What areas can be treated with Perlane®?
Perlane® is FDA-approved to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines). Perlane® can also be used off-label to treat marionette lines, wrinkling at the corners of the eyes, acne scarring, and lost facial volume in sunken cheeks.

Is Perlane® safe and are there any possible side effects?
Perlane® has a well-defined safety profile and is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds. Perlane® is made from non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, limiting the possibility of an allergic reaction or animal- based disease transmission. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is found naturally within the body and is fully biocompatible.

Side effects from Perlane® are typically mild and rare. Temporary redness and swelling at the injection site is possible. These effects usually resolve within a few days and can be covered with makeup if desired. Before your treatment, Dr. Greenberg will discuss with you any possible side effects and answer any questions that you may have about safety.

Who should administer Perlane®?
Perlane® injections are best administered by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon with an understanding of proper technique and safety. Dr. Greenberg has years of experience in administering Perlane®, and would be happy to answer your questions about whether Perlane® is right for you.

How long will the results last?
The results from Perlane® are immediately visible and typically last around 6 months. Follow-up injections are usually administered between 6 and 12 months after treatment. In most cases, less Perlane® is needed during follow-up treatments in order to achieve the results desired.

Can the effects be reversed if desired?
Yes. All hyaluronic acid fillers may be quickly dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Though it is very rarely requested, first-time patients may feel more comfortable knowing that the effects can be reversed quickly, easily, and safely, usually within 24 hours.

Can Perlane® be combined with other procedures?
Yes. Various dermal fillers and other cosmetic injectables, such as BOTOX®, are often used concurrently to treat a variety of facial areas. Additionally, different types of fillers can be used synergistically as part of advanced layer techniques. For example, Dr. Greenberg may elect to use one filler in the deep dermis to provide structural foundation, another in the mid-dermis to replace lost volume, and a superficial filler to help smooth away surface lines and wrinkles. Perlane® may also be used in combination with laser treatments or other procedures for even better results. Dr. Greenberg will discuss with you what procedure or combination of procedures may best suit your specific needs.

How can I prepare for Perlane® treatment?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Greenberg will thoroughly discuss your goals and expectations, including possible risks and the best way to prepare for your treatment. As much as possible, patients should avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen-containing products (such as Advil and Motrin), St. John's Wort, high doses of vitamin E supplements, and other blood thinners (unless medically necessary) for 1 week prior to treatment in order to minimize the risk of bruising.

What should I expect during treatment?
Perlane® treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in our offices. The procedure is quick and simple, with minimal discomfort. During the procedure, Perlane® will be injected into the treatment area using a fine needle. A topical anesthetic may be used to increase patient comfort. Perlane® with an added anesthetic is also available. You can resume your normal activities immediately following treatment.

What should I expect after treatment?
Mild swelling and bruising is possible, but not always present, for a few days following treatment. This depends on the location treated and the amount of filler that is needed. You may take Tylenol for discomfort if there is any, but don't take aspirin or ibuprofen, which may increase bruising. Dr. Greenberg will determine which aftercare product is right for you.
